Theory of semiotics

Signifier - what it makes you think of. A noun like and object.
examples - cat and rose

Signified- what I end up thinking, everyones of this is different an individual thought. Its never more than a idea.
example- a ginger cat or a red rose is what I think of.

Denotation- All the signs have a single basic or literal meaning. The evidence of what you see, say what you see.
example- the apple logo and bite taken out of a apple.

Connotation- develops when signs and codes are placed within a particular context. Memory or idea from a cue and its bought to mind.
The image which is presented within your mind for example a rose signifies love to me.

Symbolic sign- this has no resemblance between the signifier and the signified. The connection is culturally learnt.
For example the number 7 can be seen an lucky or unlucky.

Iconic signs- this has a physical resemblance to the signified and is the thing that is being represented there is direct evidence of this. An example is a photo.

Indexical signs- shows evidence of what is being represented. An example is an image of smoke resembles fire.
